🇬🇧 Sedeinga
The site of Sedeinga was first noted by Western explorers in the 19th century, who described the ruins of the Egyptian temple dedicated to Queen Tiyi. In 1963, Michela Schiff Giorgini’s team—already working at the nearby site of Soleb—undertook the first archaeological survey of Sedeinga. This led to the discovery of an extensive Napatan and Meroitic cemetery, divided into several sectors by dried-up wadis. The Italian-French team conducted five excavation campaigns in the western part of the necropolis. Following the death of Michela Schiff Giorgini, the work was continued by Jean Leclant and later by Catherine Berger-El Naggar, between 1979 and 2009. Since 2009, a new project led by Claude Rilly and Vincent Francigny has been investigating the cemetery and surrounding areas. As part of this initiative, and thanks to support from the Qatari Sudan Archaeological Project (QSAP), the temple underwent a comprehensive study and restoration of its most significant blocks between 2015 and 201
Tiyi et les dames de Nubie
Located on the west bank of the Nile, the site of Sedeinga is only 15 km from Soleb. The temple at Sedeinga is dedicated to Queen Tiye, wife of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, who reigned from around 1390 to 1352 BC and built the temple in Soleb. It is possible that the building continued to be used during the Napatan period. To the west of the temple, a vast burial site has developed over the centuries. Various archaeological excavations have uncovered a burial complex containing tombs from the Napatan period (656 to 270 BC), as well as numerous pyramid-shaped tombs from the Meroitic period (270 BC to 330 AD), some of which reused Napatan vaults. These burials have also yielded numerous Meroitic funerary objects and inscriptions, such as offering tables, stelae, statues, jewellery and other artefacts. One of the special features of this cemetery is the over-representation of women. Their graves are often accompanied by funerary steles detailing their family lineage.
