SFDAS Supervisory Bodies

The SFDAS reports to the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs (MEAE). The Consultative Commission for Archaeological Research Abroad supports French missions. Bringing together specialists, it defines scientific guidelines and assesses the quality of research projects with a view to funding by the Ministry. More than 160 missions are supported each year throughout the world.

SFDAS is attached to the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). The CNRS conducts long-term, multidisciplinary research. It also works to promote the results of research, in particular through industrial partnerships, in order to share knowledge for the common good, to provide training through and for research, and contributes to France’s national research strategy.

SFDAS is one of the 25 Joint Units of French Research Institutes Abroad (UMIFRE). These units are under the joint supervision of the MEAE and the CNRS. They operate in the fields of humanities, social sciences and archaeology, and simultaneously represent the French research internationally through their research, scientific dissemination and training programmes.
