IFAS (South Africa): French Institute of South Africa – Research
The Research Department was set up in 1995 within IFAS. Its work focuses on southern African societies from prehistory to the modern and contemporary periods, as well as on urban studies and democratic change. The Institute’s research fields are located in South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, the DRC, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
IFRA – Ibadan (Nigeria): French Institute for Research in Africa
IFRA-Ibadan was set up in Nigeria in 1990. Its research focuses on religious dynamics, the relationship between the city and the environment, identities, violence and phenomena linked to human trafficking and transnational crime. It carries out archaeological work in Nigeria as well as conservation work on public and private archives. Most of the institute’s research fields are located in Nigeria, but it also conducts research in Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Niger, Chad and Togo.
IFRA – Nairobi (Kenya): French Institute for Research in Africa
Founded in 1977, IFRA-Nairobi studies contemporary politics, culture and society, as well as regional and global economic dynamics, particularly from the perspective of epistemological criticism. Its research focuses on Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, and occasionally on the Kivus regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Together with the SFDAS, these three institutes (UMIFREs) form the UAR 3336 – Africa south of the Sahara.
CEDEJ (Egypt, Sudan): Centre for Economic, Legal and Social Studies and Documentation
CEDEJ was set up under a Franco-Egyptian cooperation agreement in 1968 and has a centre in Cairo and a branch in Khartoum. Its research focuses on digital humanities and geographic information systems, contemporary Egypt and the political reconfigurations, migrations and political and social developments in East Africa.

CFEE (Ethiopia): French Centre for Ethiopian Studies
Founded in 1991, the CFEE conducts research on Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somaliland, Djibouti and South Sudan. Its main areas of interest are the environment, trade and technology since prehistoric times, written cultures and oral history, social and political transformations in the Horn of Africa up to the present day, Ethiopian heritage and gender studies in the region.
